Delonte West may look like a bad-boy but hes never exactly been one...until now. West was arrested in Maryland on Thursday September 17th, 2009, after he cut off a police officer while riding a motorcycle, later leading the officer to find him in possession of three guns. Apparently he had a handgun in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun in a guitar case he was carrying on his back (which to me is probably the weirdest part of this all). West was released early Friday and it is said that he showed no resistance towards the police at any point in the arrest.
No one knows why West felt the need to be so heavily armed, or why he cut the police officer off, but speculations put the blame on his on-going battle with depression and an unidentified "mood disorder". Last year he left the Cavs training camp in order to seek treatment for both these conditions and claimed that he has battled them all his life, sometimes feeling better than others. He claimed to be taking medication as well as seeking help through therapy, basically trying to assure both his team and the public that any problems he has are being well taken care of. Whether or not this little stunt has anything to do with his conditions is still up in the air, but generally West is not considered a bad seed. In fact, since this year's Playoffs, the level of respect towards him has gone up, as he helped his team out quite a bit, really deserving his spot as a starter. In fact, aside from Mo Williams and of course, Lebron (or Lebreezy as I like to call him) James, Delonte West is my favorite current Cavs player.
No matter what drove Delonte to this arrest, I hope he figures his business out soon, and doesn't end up going to rehab like Michael Beasley, who also struggles with mental disorders. The consequences of West's actions have yet to be determined (if he is convicted) but as a big fan of both Delonte and the Cavs as a team, I hope he comes out on top, can shake this scandal off, and plays another fantastic season with his team.
