Allen Iverson has run into quite a bit of trouble throughout his career. Problems with the law (getting arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and weed and then getting in trouble in Atlantic City when a dealer overpayed him and Iverson then refused to give back the money), problems with the music industry (his rap 40 Bars contained lyrics that many found offensive), problems with his wife (apparently he threw her out of their house), problems with the NBA (dress code, being late to practices, mouthing off to coaches)...the list goes on and on. However, at one point, he was the man.
He was MVP at the 2001 All-Star Games as well as NBA MVP that same year. He was a member of the gold-medal winning 1995 World University Games Team. He went to the Olympics. And overall, kicked ass.
So, is a comeback in his future?
On August 18th, (my Birthday), Allen Iverson tweeted "If you think that I am just going away-Think again! I am getting ready for the NBA season. Waiting for the call. Charlotte, Miami, NY", making many wonder if he would be reunited with Larry Brown. Charlotte however, chose not to speak on this issue.
Then on August 19th, he wrote, "my people just informed me that we are getting close to a deal. I asked them to call me the when its done. I am so ready to know!", leaving all of his fans (the little he has left) anxious and curious. Yesterday, on August 26th, he posted again, saying "well I am about to begin another workout session. Agent informed me that Memphis made us an offer on yesterday. Stay tuned.", updating yet again two hours later with "Memphis is a place that I would love to play. The Grizzlies have good young players with a great upside. I love the city of Memphis too." However, Memphis has declined to comment on any of this, so for now Allen Iverson's situation is still a mystery. It should be said though that both ESPN and Fox Sports are reporting that Memphis did indeed extend an offer, but the terms have been said to be anywhere from $5 million to $10 million for a one-year contract.
I know there are a lot of AI haters out there, who not only do not care about this topic, but in fact hope no team picks him up. Though I more than understand this, and think he needs a good deal of sense knocked into him, as well as perhaps some therapy, I still stand by him. To me its sad that a number one draft pick (1996) has landed in this situation, hated by so many fans as well as NBA players. I think with an attitude adjustment and the right coach/team, he might be able to get people back on his side and start being great once again. I, for one, hope he gets it together and makes this season his year. I'm not ready to give up on him just yet.
